El meravellós Màgic d'Oz (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz) és un llibre de literatura infantil escrit per Lyman Frank Baum i il·lustrat per W. W. Denslow. Va ser publicat a Chicago l'any 1900.

(en anglès) In the civilized countries I belive there are no witches left, nor wizards, nir sorcesses, nor magicians.
(en anglès) But, you see, the Land of Oz has never been civilized, for we are cut off from all the rest of the world. Therefore, we still have witches and wizards amongst us.

Capítol 4[modifica | modifica el codi]

  • Encara que siga un lloc sec i gris, les persones de carn i ossos preferim viure al nostre país abans que en qualsevol altre.
(en anglès) No matter how dreary ang gray our homes are, we people of flesh and blood would rather live there than in any other country, be it ever so beautiful.
(en anglès) There is no place like home.
(en anglès) If your heads were stuffed with Straw, like mine, you would probably all live in the beautiful places, and then Kansas would have no people at all.
(en anglès) It is fortunate for Kansas that your have brains.
(en anglès) Brains are the only things worth having in this world, no matter whether one is a crow or a man.

(en anglès) “Oh, I see”, said the Tin Woodman. “But, after all, brains are not the best things in the world”
“Have you any?” inquired the Scarecrow.
“No, my head is quite empty”, answered the Woodman. “But once I had brains, and a heart also; so, having tried them both, I should much rather have a heart”.

(en anglès) “All the same”, said the Scarecrow, “I shall ask for brains instead of a heart, for a fool would not know what to do with a heart if he had one”.
(en anglès) “I shall take the heart,” returned the Tin Woodman; “for brains do not make one happy, and happiness is the best thing in the world”.

(en anglès) “You will be very welcome”, answered Dorothy, “for you will help to keep away the other wild beasts. It seems to me they must be more cowardly than you are if they allow you to scare them so easily”.
(en anglès) “They really are”, said the Lion, “but that doesn't make me any braver, ans as long as I know myself to be a coward I shall be unhappy”.
(en anglès) The Tin Woodman knew very well he had no heart, and therefore he took great care never to be cruel or unkind to anything.
(en anglès) “You people with hearts”, he said, “have something to guide you, and need never do wrong; but I have no heart, and so nI must be very careful.
(en anglès) “That is a first-rate idea,” said the Lion. “One would almost suspect you had brains in your head, instead of straw”.

(en anglès) “For”, he said for himself, “i fit es the head, I am sure I shall not be given a heart, since a head has no heart of its own and therefore cannot feel me. But if it is the lovely Lady, I shall beg hard for a heart, for all ladies are themselves said to be kindly hearted”.

(en anglès) “But isn't everything here green?” asked Dorothy.
”No more than in any other city”, replied Oz, “but when you wear green espectacles, why of course everything you see looks green to you”.
(en anglès) Experience is the only thing that brings knowledge, and the longer you are on earth the more experience you are sure to get.
(en anglès) All you need is confidence in yourself. There is no líving thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. The True courage is in facing danger when you are afraid, and that kind or courage you have in plenty.
(en anglès) “It makes most people unhappy. If you only knew it, you are in luck not to have a heart”.
